Bei der Internationalen Agentur für erneuerbare Energien (IRENA) handelt es sich um eine zwischenstaatliche Organisation, welche Staaten beim Übergang zu einer nachhaltigen Energiezukunft unterstützt und als Plattform für internationale Zusammenarbeit, als Kompetenzzentrum und als Quelle für politisches, technologisches, Ressourcen- und Finanzwissen über erneuerbare Energien dient. IRENA fördert die weit verbreitete Nutzung und nachhaltige Nutzung aller Formen der erneuerbaren Energien, einschließlich Bioenergie, Geothermie, Wasserkraft, Meeres-, Solar- und Windenergie, im Hinblick auf nachhaltige Entwicklung, Energiezugang, Energiesicherheit und CO2-armes Wirtschaftswachstum und Wohlstand.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation mandated with the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. At present, IRENA has 160 Members (159 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 23 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged. IRENA supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. The Agency implements its mandate with the view to sustainable development, increased energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.

The Permanent Observer Office of IRENA to the United Nations in New York (NYO) has as main functions to support in the monitoring of international developments related to sustainability and energy and identify areas for furthering the Agency’s engagement; inform IRENA HQs of developments in areas of relevance to the mandate of the Agency in the UN system; represent the Agency in meetings of relevant UN bodies and promote the Agency’s visibility and Work Plan implementation; maintain communication with Permanent Missions and UN organizations; and actively reach out to relevant stakeholders, including private sector, academia and other US-based organizations.

The purpose of the Associate Professional Programme is to enable talented and promising university graduates and post graduates to gain first-hand experience in the work of IRENA and a deeper insight into the role of the Agency in promoting the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. The programme offers valuable exposure to IRENA’s main activities and programmatic areas. On occasion, there are also opportunities in support areas such as administration, finance, human resources and public information.

Duties and Responsibilities Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Chief of Office, the Associate Professional (AP) will assist in the following duties:

Supports the NYO in monitoring and researching international developments, including on sustainable development, climate change and energy matters, and preparing background briefs and other documentation;
Supports in attending and preparing reports on UN meetings and on activities by other relevant stakeholders and entities in New York (think tanks, academia, private sector) as required;
Supports the NYO in outreach activities, including organising side-events, information sessions and in the maintenance of regular interaction on IRENA programmatic matters with different stakeholders;
Supports the NYO by providing administrative and logistical support to ensure the smooth running of the office and providing administrative support to the Chief of Office and the Director-General when visiting the NYO;
Supports the NYO in a number of matters such as:
Drafting diplomatic correspondence including letters, invitations, notes;
Preparing for meetings, speaking engagements including research, compilation and preparation of background documentation, such as concept notes, agendas, briefing notes as well as talking points, minutes and other substantive information as required;
Supporting missions by IRENA officials attending meetings at the UN HQ.
Performs any other duties as required.

Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organisational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Client Orientation: Is capable of supporting in the establishment and maintenance of excellent relations with a broad range of individuals and institutions (diplomatic representations to the UN, other international intergovernmental institutions, stakeholders) to understand the counterpart’s requirements and concerns and to gain support.

Eligibility Applicants should be no more than 32 years of age at the time of submitting their applications.

Qualifications Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) is required. A degree related to Political Science, Law, Public Administration, International Affairs, Economics or a related field would be desirable. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience/Skills: Sound knowledge of global climate change, sustainability and renewable energy issues and experience within the public sector or an intergovernmental institution is preferred. A proven knowledge of the United Nations system and working methods is an asset.

Languages: Excellent command of written and spoken English is essential. Fluency in other languages is an asset.

Amount of monthly lump-sum depends on qualifications and years of relevant work experience.
