Wembley: Age-friendly workshop

An Age-friendly WA Workshop facilitated by world leading expert Dr Jane Barratt is being held on Thursday 20 July. The workshop is an opportunity to hear from state, national and international leaders in ageing and age-friendly communities and would be of interest to representatives from state and local governments, community services, the corporate and academic sectors.

The focus of this years session will be economic participation, functional ability, diversity and research.

When registering, participants are encouraged to submit projects, initiatives or ideas that they would like to see implemented or are having difficulties implementing to build age-friendly communities. These projects will be considered and a shortlist of diverse topics selected to be workshopped.

About the presenters:
The Age-Friendly Western Australia Workshop will be facilitated by world leading expert Dr Jane Barratt, Secretary General of the International Federation on Ageing. Dr Barratt will talk about the world wide age-friendly environments movement, with a focus on how government and community can build functional ability and enable older adults to do what they value. Jane is known for her insightful, knowledgeable and honest insights into the challenges being faced by a worldwide ageing population.

Marlene Krasovitsky, Campaign Director Older Australians at The Benevolent Society and formerly Director of the Australian Human Rights Commission, Willing to Work Inquiry will explore the economic participation of older adults with a focus on workforce participation and the impact of ageism on older Australians. Marlene will also share her insights from work with the Benevolent Society and Australian Human Rights Commission.

University of Western Australia Professor Loretta Baldassar will provide an insight into current ageing research, with a particular focus on culturally and linguistically diverse seniors. Professor Baldassar is currently undertaking a research project about seniors and new media and an evaluation of the Age-friendly Communities Local Government Grants Program. Lorettas presentation will explore older adults and technology and provide highlights from the grant program evaluation.

The Age-friendly WA Workshop is delivered in partnership with the International Federation on Ageing and is an initiative of the Age-friendly Interagency Group (AFIG). The AFIG brings together State Government agencies and local government to share information on key issues affecting Western Australian older adults, and develop collaborative strategic responses to ageing.
