New York: The global ageing population

01.06.2017

The next DPI NGO meeting, which will focus on the global ageing population, and the impact and implementation of Agenda 2030, will take place in New York City, on 1 June 2017.

Population ageing, together with globalization and urbanization characterize the major demographical upheavals of our time. A new narrative is beginning to emerge globally where older persons are viewed legitimate participants and contributors to society.

Using the narrative as a backdrop, the speakers at the meeting will address the social and economic opportunities with longevity; ageism as a fundamental barrier to healthy ageing; environments such as age-friendly created to enable older people to do what they value; and the complementary roles of the United Nations and member countries and NGOs to assure "no one is left behind" as the UN looks to 2030 and beyond.

Speakers at the meeting include:
Greg Shaw (Director, International and Corporate Relations, International Federation on Ageing)
Ursula M. Staudinger (Professor of Psychology and Director, Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center, Columbia University)
Janet A. Sigal (Chair, NGO Committee on Ageing/NY)
Ruth Finkelstein (Associate Director, Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center and Director, International Longevity Center-USA)
Rosemary Lane (Senior Social Affairs Officer, Social Integration Branch, UN DESA and UN Focal Point on Ageing).
